If you are at home
Report the loss or theft to the National Police and book a passport appointment. A replacement requires the applicant to attend in person, provide the required identity evidence and photo, and pay the passport fee 1,2.
A replacement for a lost or stolen passport can be limited to the remaining validity of the missing booklet. If the old passport had less than 12 months left, the authority can issue the normal validity period 1.
If you are abroad
Make a report at the nearest local police station. You must make a loss or theft declaration at the Spanish consular office, even if you have already reported to local police 3.
The consular declaration marks the passport as missing or stolen in international police cooperation databases. A Spanish citizen who can return with a valid DNI may be able to travel to Spain or another country that accepts the DNI, subject to the carrier and border rules 3.
Emergency travel document
A Spanish consular office may issue a salvoconducto to a citizen who has no ordinary or provisional passport and needs urgent travel to Spain. It is not a substitute for keeping a regular passport current 4.
Apply in person and show evidence of the need and urgency. For loss or theft, provide evidence that the valid passport went missing. On arrival in Spain, give the salvoconducto to National Police at the border or at a police station within seven working days 4.
Replacement fees and forms
The 2026 ordinary passport fee is €30. Payment can be made by cash, by card at the document unit, or online with an accepted electronic signature. A qualifying large-family beneficiary can receive the passport free 2.
Consulates list the same €30 passport fee in their 2026 instructions. Issue time depends on the office and identity checks. A salvoconducto can require a check with Spanish National Police, so contact the mission early in the day and do not assume same-day issue 3,4.
If you find your passport later
Do not use it. Once the police report or consular declaration is recorded, the passport is cancelled and cannot cross a border. Recovery does not restore validity 3.
Take the recovered booklet to the Spanish police or consular office for surrender instructions. Travel on the replacement passport, valid DNI where accepted, or the emergency document issued for the journey 3,4.
