If you are at home
Report the passport loss or theft promptly to the police. Apply for a new passport through the competent police passport office and take the report and required identity evidence 1.
The ordinary passport cost is the booklet charge plus the administrative contribution. A new passport is issued after the authority completes its checks 1.
If you are abroad
Make a detailed report to the local police, then contact the Italian embassy or consulate responsible for the place where you are staying. A person who has made the report can apply for a new passport 1.
A temporary visitor who must leave soon can ask about an ETD. An Italian resident in the consular district can ask about a full passport replacement. The mission checks identity and may need time to contact the issuing authority 1,2.
Emergency travel document
The Emergency Travel Document is valid for one journey back to Italy or the country of permanent residence. A different destination is possible only in an exceptional approved case 1,2.
Take the police report, a recent photo, available identity evidence or a copy of the lost passport, and the travel ticket. Honorary consulates cannot issue the ETD themselves. They can transmit an application and deliver the completed document 2. The Italian Consulate General in Istanbul states that its ETD is free throughout 2026 3.
Replacement fees and forms
The Foreign Ministry lists €42.70 for the ordinary passport booklet and €73.50 for the administrative contribution, making €116.20 in total 1.
A mission's local-currency amount can change with its quarterly exchange table. The Italian Consulate in Detroit lists US$135 through 31 December 2026 4. Processing time depends on identity and authorisation checks, so use the date given by the police office or consulate.
If you find your passport later
Do not travel on a passport after reporting it lost or stolen. Contact the police office or consulate that recorded the report and follow its instructions 1,3.
Italian consular offices can receive passports that local authorities recover. The Istanbul office tells an owner who wants a recovered document returned to contact the mission. Unclaimed documents are destroyed after one year, and return costs are paid by the owner 3.
