If you are at home
Make a formal report to the public prosecutor or other competent authority in Mexico. Complete the loss, theft, or destruction form provided by the passport office. The national passport page says an applicant must present the documents required for a first passport again 1.
Book an appointment with a passport office and bring proof of Mexican nationality and identity. A lost-passport replacement is a new issuance, not a continuation of the missing booklet. The office takes the applicant's photograph, fingerprints, and signature during the process 1,2.
If you are abroad
Report the loss or theft to the competent local authority. Contact the nearest Mexican embassy or consulate and take the report to your appointment. The consulate can issue a replacement after the applicant supplies the report and the documents required for a first passport 1,2.
Consular offices set their appointment and payment arrangements. The central passport page tells applicants abroad to pay directly at the consulate and check that office's accepted payment methods before attending 1.
Emergency travel document
If you live abroad, cannot meet the standard requirements, and have an emergency, go directly to the consular office for assistance and instructions 1. Mexico uses limited-validity emergency passports in qualifying cases. The foreign ministry says a consulate can issue a new passport after theft or loss once the event is certified 2,3.
Emergency fees vary with the mission's local currency. The Mexican Embassy in Belgium listed €38 in April 2026 for an emergency passport issued after theft or loss. It listed €50 for another emergency passport with validity of no more than one year 4. Confirm the fee and collection estimate with the mission handling the case.
Replacement fees and forms
People aged over 60 and people with qualifying disabilities pay 50 per cent of the listed fee. The discount extends to agricultural workers in Canada under the stated conditions 1. The central page does not publish one processing time for every office. Use the appointment office's collection advice.
| Validity | In Mexico | At a consulate |
|---|---|---|
| One year | MXN 920 | US$44 |
| Three years | MXN 1,795 | US$101 |
| Six years | MXN 2,440 | US$137 |
| Ten years | MXN 4,280 | US$209 |
If you find your passport later
Do not try to travel on the recovered booklet after making the official loss or theft report. Take it to the passport office or consulate handling the replacement and follow that office's directions. Mexico does not permit a person to hold more than one valid ordinary passport at the same time 1.
