If you are at home
For a passport that was simply lost, fill in and print the Federal Police Comunicação de Ocorrência and take it to the in-person passport appointment. The Federal Police says a police report is not needed for a simple loss 1.
For robbery or theft, make a report with the Civil Police. Present it with the new application. This evidence matters to the fee charged for a missing passport that was still valid 1.
If you are abroad
Contact the Brazilian embassy or consulate responsible for your location after a loss, theft, or robbery abroad. The Federal Police says the mission will issue an Autorização de Retorno if it cannot issue a new passport 1.
A foreign police report for theft or robbery can support the ordinary replacement fee. If it is not in Portuguese, the Federal Police requires a sworn translation when it is used for that fee decision 1. Follow the mission's local application and appointment instructions.
Emergency travel document
The Autorização de Retorno ao Brasil, called an ARB, is for a Brazilian citizen or a foreign resident of Brazil abroad who needs to return and cannot meet the passport requirements. It is valid for the return journey, with any transit city written on it, and border officials collect it on arrival 3.
You must appear before the consular authority and prove identity. A Brazilian citizen must prove Brazilian nationality. The ARB is free. Some posts require an appointment, so check the responsible post before attending 3.
Replacement fees and forms
Urgent or emergency treatment needs approval at the in-person appointment. The extra R$77.17 charge is created by the supervisor and cannot be generated online 2. The Federal Police does not give one collection time for every lost-passport case on these pages. Use the date supplied at the appointment.
| Case | Fee |
|---|---|
| Valid passport lost, damaged, or destroyed | R$514.50 |
| Valid passport stolen or robbed, police report presented | R$257.25 |
| Approved urgent or emergency processing | R$77.17 extra |
If you find your passport later
Do not use a Brazilian passport after its loss, theft, or robbery has been reported. The Federal Police says security alerts make it unusable even if it is recovered 1.
Keep the recovered booklet until the new-passport appointment, mainly if it is still within its validity period. Present it to the officer handling the new application 1.
