Report it by phone
The Australian Passport Office says you must report a lost or stolen passport by calling it. If you are overseas, contact your nearest Australian embassy or consulate 1. The passport phone line is 131 232 5.
Make sure the passport really is lost before you call. There are penalties for people who do not report a loss or theft as soon as possible. Making false or misleading statements is a criminal offence with penalties of up to 10 years in prison, a fine of 1,000 penalty units, or both 1.
Police reports
If your passport was stolen, the Passport Office recommends you report the theft to police and keep a copy of the report. If it was stolen overseas, report it to local police and to Australian police once you are home 1.
When you apply for your new passport, tell the office as much as you can about what happened and give any police report or report number 1.
Replace it in Australia
A lost or stolen passport cannot be renewed or replaced. You apply for a new passport through the online application portal, on a paper form from a participating post office, or through an embassy or consulate if you are overseas 1,4.
These are the fees as of 1 January 2026 2:
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| 10-year adult passport | A$422 |
| 5-year child passport | A$213 |
| Priority (2-day processing), extra | A$308 |
| Fast Track (5-day processing), extra | A$107 |
| Overseas surcharge, adult | A$189 |
| Overseas surcharge, child | A$92 |
| Emergency passport overseas | A$265 |
If you are overseas
You can only apply for an emergency passport if you are overseas and have an urgent need to travel. Apply at an Australian embassy or consulate 3.
Emergency passports are valid for up to one year and do not have a chip, so some countries restrict their use. Check the rules of every country you plan to enter or transit 3.
You can apply for a full-validity passport at the same time. Both the emergency and standard fees apply 3. Overseas fees are usually paid in local currency at the same value as the Australian dollar amount 2.
What happens after you report it
When you report a passport lost or stolen, the Passport Office cancels it and notifies border authorities in Australia and overseas. You cannot use it again, even if you find it 1.
Repeat losses carry limits. If you lose two passports in 5 years, your next adult passport will be valid for 5 years instead of 10, at the 10-year fee. Lose three or more in 5 years and your next passport may be valid for 2 years at most, or may not be issued 1.
If you prove the loss was due to exceptional circumstances beyond your control, it will not count against you. If you find the passport and show it to the office, the loss may not count, and you complete a B11 form 1.
